Wednesday, January 25th 2012 12:27

Greater Manchester Police to review driving police

Greater Manchester Police is thinking about changes to it's driving policy, after an unmarked supercar was written off during a test drive

It happened  at about 2am on the 15th of December last year.

An officer had taken the VW Golf R, which is the most powerful Golf ever producedm  with a top speed of 155 miles an hour.on public roads, round the Old Trafford area

Police are staying very tight lipped on exactly what happened, but the car was a complete write off

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The driver was taken to hopsital with a back injury and is now out of hospital, but has been suspended from driving duties.

As as result,  the force is now  looking into it's policy on letting officers test drive cars and has given us this statement:

Shortly before 1.50am on Thursday 15 December 2011, a police officer in an unmarked vehicle was involved in a single vehicle collision on Wharfside Way, Old Trafford.

The officer, from the ANPR Intercept Unit, was injured in the collision and he was taken to the Manchester Royal Infirmary having suffered a back injury.

No members of the public were involved.

As a result of this incident, Greater Manchester Police is currently reviewing its policy on officers test driving demonstration cars on public roads. That review is ongoing and it would not be appropriate to make any further comment.
