Vandals destroy plaque for 5 year old girl in Northwich

Monday, May 21st 2012 13:17

Maddie Wilkinson lost her battle with cancer in 2009 .

Police are investigating after vandals destroyed a plaque in a school garden in Northwich.

The ceramic plaque was mounted on a wooden chair within a memorial garden at St Wilfrids RC Primary School in Hartford. The plaque paid tribute to the life of Maddie Wilkinson, who tragically lost her battle with cancer in 2009 aged five years.

Over the course of the weekend, vandals destroyed the garden, setting fire to garden furniture and picnic benches. The memorial plaque was partially destroyed by fire.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Williams said "This is an absolutely dispicable crime. We believe from our investigation so far that those responsible had built a makeshift campsite in the school grounds and used the garden furniture as firewood, destroying the plaque that commemorated the life of a very brave little girl. I urge anyone who may have any information about who may have accessed the school grounds over the course of this weekend, or who may have been involved in this crime in any way, to come forward. This abhorrent crime has caused a massive amount of distress and upset to a family who have already faced the grief of losing their child, and I thoroughly condemn the actions of those responsible for destroying this tribute to her life"

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident 141 of 21st May, alternatively information may be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
