A Campaign Has Been Launched To Help Pay For A Grave Stone For The First Woman Police Officer Who Is Buried In Runcorn

Edith Smith was the first warranted WPC.

She was buried in an unmarked grave in Runcorn in Halton Cemetery.

Smith became the first woman to be given a warrant card in 1915 where she received the power of arrest and became the first WPC - marking her name in history.

The project is supported by the Police Federation and the Superintendents' Association and the force is working in conjunction with Cheshire Police, Lincolnshire Police and the Historical Societies of Grantham, Oxton and Runcorn.

Merseyside Police have now launched a JustGiving page for donations, where you can read Edith's full story.
