British woman 'dies in Spain bungee accident'

A British woman is reported to have died in a bungee jumping accident in Spain.

According to local reports, the accident happened on Tuesday afternoon in Lanjaron, Granada.

The 23-year-old woman was believed to have hit the wall of a bridge and was left hanging on the rope, according to newspaper La Nueva Espana.

The Foreign Office has confirmed it is investigating the incident.

A spokesman said: "We are urgently looking into reports of the death of a British national in Spain and stand ready to provide consular assistance."

The woman had been visiting the area, in southern Spain, with a family member, La Nueva Espana said.

The Spanish Guardia Civil are investigating the accident, specifically looking into whether the woman was bungee jumping on her own or had hired a company, according to the report.

The rope was not broken, so the accident may have been caused by a miscalculation in the length of the rope, it said.
