Merseyside Police can confirm that the driver of one of the Heavy Goods Vehicles has sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision.
He has been taken to hospital for treatment and for his condition to be assessed.
No-one else has been seriously injured.
The motorway is likely to remain closed for much of the afternoon whilst both of the HGVs are recovered. As a result, officers are continuing to urge motorists in the surrounding area to avoid using the westbound carriageway of the M62 for the time being.
Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call MSOC Roads Policing officers on 0151 777 5747.
Meanwhile, Highways Agency traffic officers from the outstation at Newton-le-Willows are currently at the scene working to free drivers trapped behind the incident, by turning them around on the carriageway and sending them back to junction 8 where they can leave the motorway network or join the eastbound M62.
Drivers planning to use the route, including those heading for Liverpool John Lennon Airport, are advised to avoid the area and seek an alternative route or delay their journeys if possible. Drivers travelling to Liverpool John Lennon Airport are advised to use the M56 instead.
An official diversion is in place with drivers advised to follow the ‘hollow black square’ symbol taking drivers southbound from junction 8 and back to junction 7 via the westbound A57.
Highways Agency traffic officers at the North West regional control centre at Newton-le-Willows and colleagues at the National Traffic Operations Centre near Birmingham have set signs across the local, regional and wider motorway network to advise drivers of the closure.
Drivers are urged to check travel conditions before setting out on journeys.
